What's The Work Like?

Special hazard technicians build, install, and maintain fire alarm and fire suppression systems. You will experience working in all facets of construction including: New Commercial, Industrial, Residential and Retrofits to name a few. With today's ever changing technology and diverse applications, your career will offer many exciting challenges.

 
Your Duties

As a special hazards technician, your duties include:

  • Install, inspect, and repair both conventional and addressable fire Alarm, FM-200
  • HFC- 227EA), Halon , CO2, Deluge Pre-action, Dry Chemical, Inert, Air Sampling and Gas Detection systems.
  • Work in Commercial, Industrial, and Residential applications.
  • Cut, thread, bend, assemble, and install conduit and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings.
  • Install panels, cable and devices.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and repair systems using computers, multi-meters and associated equipment.
  • Read and interpret prints, diagrams, schematics, specifications, system programs, and service manuals.
  • Complete job reports, service paperwork, inspection reports, time sheets, and vehicle reports accurately.
  • Respond to on-call emergencies.
 
Work Conditions

The standard work week for special hazards technicians is 40 hours (8 hours a day, 5 days a week). As with many careers in construction, there are peak periods that will require you to work overtime. The number of additional hours you work each week depends on construction schedules and company work loads, to name a few.

As a special hazards technician, you may work indoors and outdoors, often with a team of other construction professionals. The job can be physically demanding - you may work at considerable heights on both ladders or lifts and have to lift heavy materials.

As with all careers in the construction industry, safety is the top priority. Special hazards technicians are trained to work safely, and wear special equipment to protect themselves from injury.

 
Essential Skills

The most important Essential Skills are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to travel within Fire Engineering's customer base.
  • 3-5 years fire alarm / fire suppression experience.
  • Familiarity with testing equipment, computers, and multi-meters.
  • Able to lift 40 pounds, climb ladders, and work in difficult locations such as ducts, crawl spaces, on scaffolding, etc.
  • Ability to pass pre employment drug screening, security/background check and post-employment random drug screen.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work unsupervised.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics and software/systems programs.
  • Good communication skills
  • Professionalism and neat appearance.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of at least 2 major brands of conventional and addressable Fire alarm, FM-200 (HFC-227EA)
  • Halon, CO2, Deluge, Pre-action, Dry Chemical, Inert, Air Sampling and Gas Detection systems.
  • Fire Alarm and Special Hazards NICET certifications.
